After World War I many German locomotives ended up with the Belgian and French railways as reparation payments. Thus three Bavarian S 36 locomotives were a ssigned to Belgium in 1919 that were intended for hauling express trains. These three locomotives were handed over to the Belgian State Railways (Chemins de fer de ltat Belge) in 1920 This entailed the Bavarian locomotives 3620, 3646 and 3649 which were delivered to the Bavarian K.Bay.Sts.B. in 1918. With the Belgian State Railways, they were re-classified as the type 59 with the running numbers 5920, 5946 and 5949. The then re-classified type 59 locomotives were initially stationed in Brussels-North where they were deployed along with the Type 61 (Prussian S 10.1) locomotives, that amongst others, were used to pull heavy express trains to Ostend and Herbesthal. In 1922 the locomotives were stationed in Ostend, but stood idle there. In the same year they were transferred to Doornik where they were deployed for the routes to Brussels and Lille (Belgium) The locomotives were only used for a short period with the Belgian railways and in 1923 aa 3 units were decommissioned. The locomotives were scrapped in 1924. In contrast to the usual brownblack colour scheme of the Chemins de fer de l’tat Belge, these type 59 locomotives have never driven around in this livery but retained their original green colour until they were scrapped in 1924.
